What the
office does.

If you need to send something, bring it in. We can help you figure out the best way to get it there. If you’re not sure what you need, that’s fine — we’ve seen most things.

Warren can look up anything in the record if you need documentation. I can usually tell you what it costs before he gets back to the desk.

Calloway Telegraph and Postal Office

The sign above the door reads Calloway Telegraph and Postal Office. The telegraph line was decommissioned before Warren arrived. The sign has not been changed because changing it would require a budget line that does not exist and Warren has not requested one because the sign is historically accurate and he prefers historically accurate signage and the stapler needed replacing and that was the more pressing matter.

Dottie Reyes has been on the counter since before Warren started, which she considers the relevant fact about their working relationship. She will tell you what it costs before he gets back to the desk. This is not a competition. It is a system. It works.

Office of the Postmaster Ref. OP-1964-07
The office is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 to 5:00.
Dottie Reyes is on the counter Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
The postmaster is available for inquiries requiring access to the records.
Inquiries should be made in person or by telephone.
The office does not accept inquiries by email.
This is a preference, not a technical limitation.

The original operator's desk

The desk has been maintained in its original condition since the office was established. It is dusted on Fridays alongside the other surfaces. Warren sees no reason to distinguish between them. Both are part of the office. Both get the same attention.

Incoming Log -- Ref. 1961-0091 Item: one jar, preserves
From: N. Greer, librarian
Received: first autumn
Disposition: windowsill
Status: present.
Warren dusts it every Friday.
Both have been here since before him.
Both get the same attention.
From the record

The jar on the windowsill catches the afternoon light in a way that makes it genuinely difficult to determine whether the glass is amber or the light is. This is a question Warren has never investigated because the jar looks right there and looking right somewhere is, in his considered view, adequate justification for being there.

It does not lean into the light. It sits squarely and does its job with complete commitment, which is all that has ever been asked of anything in this office, and which the jar has understood from the beginning.

Its origin is not in the record. The incoming log entry is the complete record. Warren has read it. He considers it sufficient.

Pneumatic tube terminal.

The line to the regional sorting office was decommissioned in 1956. Warren has not removed the terminal because he has not decided where to put it.

The jar

The jar has been on the windowsill since before Warren started. He does not know its origin beyond what is in the incoming log. The incoming log entry is the complete record. He has read it. He considers it sufficient.

He dusts it every Friday alongside the original operator's desk, giving each the same attention. Both have been here since before him. Both are part of the office. The record does not require more than it holds.

If you have a question about the jar, the answer is: one jar, preserves, N. Greer, librarian, first autumn. That is all that is in the record.

The jar looks right there.
